Corporate Social Responsibility

We are committed to conducting business in a responsible way, at all times, and supporting the communities in which we live and work through a range of programs and activities.

Our Commitment

As risk and uncertainty change and grow around the world, we believe that supporting our communities is more important than ever before. Marsh and Marsh McLennan share a proud history of service and support to the communities in which we operate and our colleagues work and live. Our commitment to building a stronger, more resilient world is deeply rooted in the belief that we are able to help address society’s greatest challenges when we work together and bring our collective expertise to make a difference. Our goal is to drive both business and social impact by:

Building a more resilient world

The long-term wellbeing of society and the strength of the global economy depends on our ability to create a more sustainable and inclusive world. In 2008, our parent company, Marsh McLennan, created an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Committee, comprised of colleagues across our four businesses, to identify and advance our global ESG priorities. The ESG Committee regularly reports on key metrics to ensure our company is addressing the most pressing needs of our communities including human capital management and cybersecurity. ESG is a critical component of Marsh and Marsh McLennan’s strategy with leadership involvement at every level including the Board of Directors. Learn more on how Marsh McLennan is reimaging what’s possible for ESG.

Partnering for Impact

We draw on our collective strengths to better serve our clients and communities in the face of adversity. Each year, thousands of Marsh colleagues use their business skills to build more resilient communities. Across the Marsh McLennan enterprise, we have partnered with non-profit organisations in the areas of mentoring and disaster resiliency, to enable colleagues to support at-risk communities. These partnerships also enable Marsh to explore new ways to add value around the world.

Global Non-Profit Partners:
  • Cherie Blair Foundation for Women: colleagues serve as mentors in the Mentoring Women in Business Program, which provides women in developing and emerging economies with the skills, technology, networks and access to financial services they need to become successful business owners.
  • Junior Achievement (JA): our colleagues have the opportunity to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy by educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
  • Missing Maps: Marathons bring colleagues together to put vulnerable communities on the official maps by tracing satellite imagery. Humanitarian groups use these maps to better respond to disasters and crisis in these areas.
Marsh Africa Corporate Social Responsibility Focus Areas:
Education

Marsh has a vision for South Africa in which education is transformed. In this vision, schools perform with excellence. Schools contribute to an environment in which young people transition into their post school lives equipped for the challenges ahead.

Boost a School programme does more; working in partnership with schools, each with deep and systemic problems and sited in poor and disadvantaged areas, Boost a School facilitates a shared platform for improved school performance and post school transitions. It also fosters relationships that draw people together across socio-economic divides, focused on a shared goal of a better life for our children and a more prosperous future for our country.

Marsh through Boost a School provide systemic developmental support at school level in order to improve the performance of learners, educators and school governance structures and enable successful post school transitions.

Charitable Donations

Marsh makes donations to a wide range of not-for-profit organisations benefiting disadvantaged children, people with disabilities and communities.

Nelson Mandela Day

Marsh is proud to be a part of Nelson Mandela’s legacy which has inspired colleagues to give of their time for social good. We are proud participant of Nelson Mandela Day every year, selected projects that embrace the ideology behind this Day with the aim of affecting real change in the communities Marsh operates in.

All projects are in support of two of Mandela’s key areas of focus, education and service to the community.

Cell C Take a Child to Work Day

Marsh is proud to be associated with Cell C Take a Child to Work Day. It was introduced to South Africa’s business community in 2003, it encourages young women to dream and to believe that their ambitions are achievable. It allows them to experience time in an actual work environment, shadowing top executives. It is a practical step towards enabling them to make the connection between what they learn at school and their future career goals

Inclusion & Diversity

The company also applies a robust Inclusion and Diversity Policy in support of a key objective to attract, retain, develop and motivate the best people in our fields of endeavour, at all levels. Learn more
