Meet Nia

As a financial lines insurance broker at Marsh, my role is about connecting with clients on a personal level. I help them find insurance policies that not only address their unique risk exposures but also suggest strategies to improve their risk profile, ultimately leading to more affordable premiums.

Working in financial lines insurance is fascinating because we deal with claimable events that are somewhat intangible. It's like a blend of science and art, where we analyse factors like a client's revenue, employee numbers, and industry to gauge the likelihood of a claim. These policies operate on a “claims made and notified” basis, which means we have to ensure clients maintain continuous coverage, even for claims related to past events. It's like painting a picture to find the perfect insurance fit for our clients.

Tell us something important about your family or background that helped form the person and colleague you are today?

Growing up as a child of first-generation immigrants, I was exposed to diverse perspectives from a young age, fuelling my natural curiosity about different viewpoints. This curiosity led me to pursue psychology as a field of study.

My exposure to various people and ways of thinking also fostered a deep appreciation for the human aspect of connecting with others. During my time in law school, I came to understand the invaluable nature of networking and relationship-building. In the field of brokering, especially at Marsh, cultivating these connections is vital not only for your current clients but also for your entire portfolio in the present year and the years ahead.

One of my mentors once described insurance as a hidden gem. I couldn't agree more. What truly forms the foundation of this industry, especially at Marsh, are qualities like curiosity, inquisitiveness, the significance of human interaction, a passion for delivering exceptional results to clients, and an entrepreneurial spirit that drives us to provide outstanding outcomes compared to our competitors.

Marsh has a learning culture. Tell us about something new you learned recently. How did you learn it?

As the chair of the Mental Health @ Marsh McLennan resource group in the Pacific region, I've gained valuable insights. In this role, I've connected with various individuals within Marsh McLennan, expanding my network in ways I wouldn't have otherwise. For example, our committee is arranging an external speaker to address workplace well-being during the upcoming Pacific Learning Day sessions in Melbourne. Through organizing events for Mental Health Month, I've come to appreciate the dedication and effort employees invest in hosting these events and securing keynote speakers.

How does your work support Marsh in being the Risk Advisor of the Future?

Marsh offers robust support to risk advisors through various avenues, fostering a culture of growth and collaboration. One such initiative in the FINPRO team is our monthly "lunch and learn" sessions. These gatherings provide a platform for us to delve into financial lines insurance topics, seek guidance from experts, and discuss everything from wording to legislative changes. It's an inclusive space where colleagues with varying experience levels engage in open dialogue. As someone relatively new to the industry, I find this forum invaluable for learning and addressing our clients' needs effectively.

At Marsh, continuous education is not just encouraged; it's embedded in our ethos. What sets Marsh apart is our commitment to transparent communication. This openness extends to both our internal interactions and client relationships. By maintaining an ongoing dialogue, we aim for excellence, often identifying potential risks that might otherwise go unnoticed. This approach allows us to assist clients in mitigating these risks effectively, selecting the most suitable policies, and managing their renewal expectations. We are also committed to building and nurturing strong relationships with insurers. These relationships can make all the difference in navigating claims and ensuring a smooth renewal process.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day. Why is this topic important to you? How have you helped raise awareness about the importance of mental well-being?

Mental health isn't just relevant; it's essential for every individual. It touches various facets of our lives and communities. Everyone should have the resources and tools to be their best selves, especially when they need support. Moreover, mental health plays a pivotal role in achieving optimal results in our personal lives and work environments. When employees feel supported and heard, we can collectively achieve our best outcomes.

Mental Health @ Marsh McLennan has actively supported initiatives such as the Push-Up Challenge to raise awareness and funds. We've hosted informative webinars and informative events to introduce and educate our colleagues about various topics, such as mental health response training sessions and @YourBest, our company’s digital solution designed to support our colleagues on their personalized well-being journey.

Understanding and recognizing that mental health is integral across the board, our mental health resource group also collaborates with other resource groups. For instance, we’ve partnered with PRIDE, the resource group for LGBTQ+ colleagues and allies, to host panel discussions on topics like rainbow youth and mental health. Together, we're spreading awareness and fostering understanding across our diverse community.
