Meet Remy

I am both an environmental and property risk consultant at Marsh. I conduct environmental and property risk audits, quantifying these risks and associated liabilities for a range of industrial clients. I help our clients look at their environmental footprint within South African regulations and assist with the application of mitigating measures for environmental risks identified, both current and future.

By qualification, I’m a chemical engineer. I came to Marsh through a graduate program for the Marsh Advisory segment of South Africa, an 18-month rotational program. When I first started in 2019, environment was a new space. I fell in love with the work and understanding how we can prolong the longevity of our environment. I told my manager I wanted to stay in this division and have been here since 2020.

Marsh has a learning culture. Tell us about something new you learned recently. How did you learn it?

I’m currently between two job titles. I’m going into more of a project manager role while mentoring someone on my team to do the site work I used to do. As part of this move, I recently learned from a colleague how to process a client invoice. It’s a step towards learning more about the finance and revenue-generating piece of the business. I’m learning things like the correct lingo to use and how to forecast. This is all new to me. I’m nervous but have been enjoying the learning journey.

How does a hybrid work environment support you in doing your work?

A hybrid work environment is very effective for me. Hybrid work allows me to be more productive as I don't have to worry about driving in traffic every morning. Since I constantly travel to clients across South Africa, I hardly have time to myself, and the hybrid system has allowed me to develop my own personal planner.

How has being a mentor, mentee, or both shaped your life and career?

Having a mentor has helped me grow my skills, gain a new perspective on my life and career in terms of my goals and achievements, and be more open-minded about career opportunities.

Within Marsh Advisory South Africa, we have a program called Advocates of Change which focuses on social impact, skills transfer, and culture. We encourage our colleagues to volunteer during Mandela Day, upskill fellow colleagues, celebrate heritage and religious days, and host events to establish an uplifting in-office culture. We work to keep our events varied, as, on my floor, five different generations are working!

Through Advocates of Change, I jumped at the chance to mentor two students at a local high school. Being a mentor gives me great joy, knowing I can help a younger generation achieve their goals by providing guidance and imparting knowledge.

What is the most meaningful advice you’ve received?

The most meaningful advice I received was from my mentor at university: If you don’t sacrifice for what you want, what you want will be the sacrifice. This advice helped me gain perspective on what is important to me and put in the effort to achieve the results I want. Since I received that advice from my mentor, it has become my motto for any task or project I get involved in.
