Which Asian economies have implemented TCFD reporting guidelines and requirements?

Marsh’s Climate Disclosure Playbook breaks down what you need to know and the steps you can begin taking to prepare for climate risk disclosures such as those outlined in the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). For companies operating in Asia, below are some of the TCFD reporting requirements that have been implemented (as of Q1 2023).

China

  • The China Securities Regulatory Commission has introduced new ESG elements into the report requirements for listed companies.
  • Meanwhile, the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission now requires banks and insurers to release climate-related disclosures.

Hong Kong

  • The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has issued guidance for banks and other authorised institutions on climate-related risk. The guidance recommends the adoption of TCFD-aligned reporting no later than mid-2023.

Japan

  • The Japan Financial Services Agency has said it will encourage listed companies to align their climate-related disclosures with the TCFD.
  • The Bank of Japan has also referenced the TCFD framework in recommendations issued to financial institutions.

Singapore

  • Listed companies in sectors deemed more vulnerable to climate risk are required to report in line with the TCFD framework.
  • The Singapore Exchange (SGX) applies a policy of “comply or explain” to companies in other sectors.
