The March 11, 2011 9.0 magnitude earthquake that struck off Japan’s northeastern coast, triggering a tsunami that reached as far as California, caused significant loss of life and devastating damage to property and infrastructure. This was the worst earthquake in Japan’s history and the fifth largest earthquake on record globally. Further compounding the situation, nuclear power plants were damaged causing worries about the possible meltdown of nuclear reactors and the release of harmful radioactive materials. These catastrophic events have severely damaged the Japanese infrastructure and disrupted the Japanese economy, the third largest in the world, and are now disrupting business activity to varying degrees throughout the world.
